The much publicised US 'fiscal cliff' negotiations has resulted in the US estate taxes increasing to 40% from the previous 35% rate. This is less than the 55% rate that would have applied if the negotiations had failed. Other interesting aspects from an estate planning perspective are outlined here.
Ireland has a double taxation treaty with the US for inheritance taxes (though not for gift taxes).
